President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead a powerful Federal Government delegation to Kano State to commiserate with victims of the recent fire disaster at Singer Market, one of Nigeria’s largest food markets.
The delegation is set to depart Abuja tomorrow to convey President Tinubu’s heartfelt condolences to the affected traders, who suffered losses estimated in billions of Naira.
The inferno, which erupted on Saturday evening and raged into Sunday morning, caused extensive damage and marked the second fire outbreak at the market in less than two weeks.
In addition to expressing sympathy, the team will pledge financial assistance from the Federal Government to support the victims and collaborate with Kano State authorities to expedite the market’s reopening, helping restore livelihoods for thousands of traders.
The delegation comprises prominent figures, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, Senator Kawu Ismaila, and Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman of the House Appropriation Committee.
Also joining are Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Dr. Bernard M. Doro and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Director-General Mrs. Zubaida Umar.
President Tinubu, who spoke by telephone with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressed deep concern over the recurring incidents.
He described the latest blaze as particularly alarming and has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the causes of these repeated fires to prevent future occurrences and address traders’ despair.
The Singer Market, a vital commercial hub in Kano, has been severely impacted, with reports indicating properties worth over N5 billion destroyed, over 1,000 businesses affected, and several people missing amid the chaos.
