A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) involved in the fatal accident that claimed the lives of two associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
Kayode appeared before the court on Tuesday for the continuation of the trial.
The Ogun State Police Command had, on January 2, arraigned the defendant on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
Earlier, the presiding magistrate, Olufunilayo Somefun, granted Kayode ₦5 million bail with two sureties. He was subsequently remanded at a correctional facility pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. The case had initially been adjourned to January 20 for trial.
At the resumption of proceedings on Tuesday, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that three of the four prosecution witnesses were present. The witnesses included officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, also known as the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
Nigiwe, however, requested an adjournment of the case until March to allow the prosecution to duplicate the case file and forward it to the Ogun State Attorney-General through the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
The defence counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, opposed the application, arguing that since the prosecution witnesses were already in court, the trial should proceed.
In her ruling, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to February 25, directing that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Attorney-General of Ogun State for legal advice.
The incident occurred on December 29, 2025, when the Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and three others crashed into a stationary truck around the Sinoma area near Sagamu, while they were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu.
Joshua reportedly sustained minor injuries and survived the crash. However, two of his close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — lost their lives. Ghami was Joshua’s long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer.
The boxer was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, on December 31, 2025, after receiving treatment.
