The Southern Governors’ Forum is set to meet on Wednesday in Iperu, Ogun State, for high-level deliberations on pressing national and regional issues. The gathering, scheduled for 10 a.m., will be hosted at the private residence of the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun.
The meeting was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Ogun State Governor. According to the statement, the session will provide a platform for southern governors to harmonise positions on key matters affecting the region, including security and economic cooperation.
In a notable addition to the day’s agenda, the governors will later hold a joint session at 1 p.m. with the Southern Traditional Rulers Council. This engagement aims to strengthen collaboration between political leaders and traditional institutions, reflecting a growing recognition of the influential role traditional rulers play in community security, conflict resolution and cultural cohesion.
Ahead of the meeting, Governor Abiodun expressed delight over the arrival of governors and royal fathers from across the southern region. In a post on X, he emphasised the importance of their presence and the value of their contributions.
“As we prepare to host the Southern Governors’ Forum meeting today, we were pleased to receive some of the distinguished attendees, particularly traditional rulers and respected leaders from across the southern region,” Abiodun said.
“Their visit offered us the opportunity to deepen ongoing engagements and align our shared expectations ahead of the gathering.
“We value the presence of our royal fathers and regional leaders, whose wisdom and guidance continue to enrich our processes. As host, we remain committed to creating an atmosphere that encourages honest dialogue and fosters stronger collaboration among all stakeholders as we work together for the peace, stability, and development of our region and country by extension.”
The forum is expected to discuss a range of issues affecting the southern states, with security challenges, interstate economic cooperation and regional development strategies topping the agenda. Southern leaders are also anticipated to explore ways to enhance coordination on policy implementation across the region.
The meeting marks another effort by the Southern Governors’ Forum to present a united front on matters of collective interest and to strengthen ties between political authorities and traditional leadership within the region.
