President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bolstering Nigeria’s judicial system, describing a functional, independent, and well-equipped judiciary as central to the nation’s democratic stability.
Speaking at the 2025 Conference of All Nigerian Judges of Superior Courts of Record in Abuja, Tinubu stressed that the judiciary must operate within a united democratic framework in which all arms of government collaborate in serving Nigerians.
“Their faith in the judicial process is the foundation of our national stability. I wish to reaffirm, with clarity, my administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting the judiciary in fulfilling its constitutional mandate. The judiciary does not exist in isolation,” Tinubu said.
He highlighted the courts’ critical role as a pillar of democracy, emphasising that integrity, efficiency, and capacity are essential for their operations. “It functions within a larger democratic framework in which the executive, legislature, and judiciary must work in synergy with mutual respect and shared responsibility to the Nigerian people. We must remain united by purpose, even when separated by function,” the President added.
Tinubu outlined the need for tangible reforms to improve judges’ work environment and the functioning of courts. “We cannot build a just society without a fearless and functional judiciary. We are resolved to provide institutional and material support that enables our courts to perform their duties with dignity, confidence, and efficiency,” he said.
He also called for modern, well-equipped courtrooms and faster justice delivery, noting that technology is now essential. “The digitisation of our court process, adoption of advanced case management systems, and provision of secure and reliable judicial facilities will receive sustained attention,” Tinubu said. He added that a digital, transparent judiciary will enhance accountability, public trust, and efficiency.
Describing judges as “the living custodians of justice,” Tinubu stressed the importance of their welfare, training, and independence. He warned that judicial integrity must never be compromised, noting, “Justice must never be for sale. Corruption in any form, or in any arm of government, weakens the nation, but corruption in the judiciary destroys it to the core.”
The President concluded by pledging his administration’s support for efforts to strengthen discipline and uphold the dignity of the judiciary, insisting that misconduct must be eradicated to preserve public confidence in the system.
