The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has escalated its voter sensitisation campaign across the six Area Councils ahead of the devolution of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to all 62 electoral wards, commencing Monday, 29 September 2025.
This initiative underscores INEC’s commitment to ensuring robust citizen engagement and inclusivity in the electoral process as the FCT Area Council elections, scheduled for 21 February 2026, approach.
The intensified voter education drive demonstrates INEC’s resolve to leave no eligible citizen unregistered.
Commission staff, supported by serving National Youth Service Corps members, engaged communities at major markets across the six Area Councils, addressing enquiries, facilitating voter registration transfers, and assisting with requests for replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs).
Sensitisation flyers were distributed to reinforce awareness of the CVR process.
Additionally, Electoral Officers conducted stakeholders’ meetings in their respective Area Councils to secure the support of key community leaders for the ward-level CVR and other electoral activities.
These engagements aim to foster collaboration and ensure the success of the registration exercise, which will run until 8 October 2025, in line with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022, mandating a suspension 90 days before elections.
The FCT’s CVR devolution follows the suspension of online pre-registration on 15 September 2025, with INEC extending physical registration to 69 centres, including all 62 wards, to enhance accessibility.
The commission has urged eligible residents to seize this opportunity to register or update their voter details, reinforcing its commitment to a transparent and inclusive electoral process ahead of the 2026 Area Council elections.
