The leadership of Nigeria’s 10th Senate has once again revised its legislative calendar, postponing the resumption of plenary sittings from 23 September to 7 October 2025.
The extension was communicated via an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to the Senate President, and made available to New Daily Prime on Monday.
The decision, which effectively prolongs the National Assembly’s annual recess by an additional two weeks, has sparked concern among some lawmakers and political observers. No official reason was given for the delay, but sources within the Senate told New Daily Prime that the shift was intended to allow senators to fully observe Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations on 1 October.
In the memo, titled “Notice of Shift in Plenary Resumption Date,” Akubueze apologised to senators for the short notice.
“This is to respectfully inform Distinguished Senators that the resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025,” the notice read.
“Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted. Distinguished Senators are kindly invited to note the postponement and adjust their schedules accordingly. Thank you for your kind understanding, and God bless.”
The Senate had earlier adjourned plenary on 24 July for its annual break. At the time, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the adjournment as an act of “chamber reciprocity”, aligning with the House of Representatives’ recess in accordance with the legislative calendar.
With the latest adjustment, several key matters including oversight investigations into government expenditure and pending executive appointments will remain on hold until the Senate reconvenes.
