Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82. His death was confirmed on Sunday afternoon by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, and longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, via separate posts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
According to the announcement, Buhari passed away in a clinic in London. No specific cause of death has been disclosed as of the time of this report.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin,” both Ahmad and Shehu wrote in near-identical statements.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Before that, he led the country as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985 following a coup.
His political career was defined by a strong anti-corruption agenda, economic reforms, and a controversial but consistent approach to national security challenges, including the fight against Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast.
During his time in office, Buhari was praised by supporters for his austere personal lifestyle and emphasis on accountability, but he also faced criticism over his handling of the economy, press freedoms, and ethnic tensions.
Details regarding funeral and burial arrangements are expected to be released by the family in line with Islamic customs.
Muhammadu Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and their children.
May he rest in peace.
