The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has inducted 624 education graduates from the University of Uyo into the teaching profession, in what officials described as a record-breaking and historic ceremony.
Speaking at the university’s 14th induction ceremony on Friday in Uyo, the Registrar/Chief Executive of TRCN, Dr Ronke Soyombo, emphasised the need for teachers in the 21st century to be technologically proficient, adaptable, and globally competitive.
Represented by the Director of Regulation, Accreditation and Enforcement, Dr Jacinta Ezeahurukwe, Soyombo said the future of education is digital and demands innovation in teaching.
“Teaching should be accorded its rightful place of prominence through the inculcation of best practices, this can be achieved by being innovative and creative in teaching, adopting new approaches, and leveraging technologies and methodologies that engage students, foster critical thinking, and promote lifelong learning,” Soyombo said.

She stressed that the modern teacher must not only be knowledgeable but also skilled in digital tools and techniques that enhance classroom effectiveness.
“The 21st-century teacher must be tech-savvy, flexible, and globally competent. We must emphasise and embrace digital tools to enhance our teaching practices.”
Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo, hailed the induction as a landmark event, noting it was the largest in the institution’s history. He praised the TRCN for its unwavering efforts to uphold professional standards and elevate the status of teaching in Nigeria.
“As a university known for excellence, we will continue to provide a conducive learning environment and maintain the highest standards in education, TRCN’s contributions to standardising and streamlining the profession have been remarkable,” Ndaeyo stated.
Also addressing the inductees, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Ime E. Emah, urged the graduates to uphold the dignity of the teaching profession. She revealed that the inductees included holders of PhDs, Master’s degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, and Bachelor’s degrees across various disciplines.
“You are being formally admitted into a noble profession. Make a difference wherever you find yourselves, serve with passion, commitment, and integrity. Remember, UNIUYO is a brand—protect it with your actions,” she said.
The induction marks a significant milestone for the University of Uyo and the TRCN as both institutions reaffirm their commitment to quality education, professionalism, and preparing teachers to meet the challenges of modern education.
