Ireti Kingibe, the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has assured Nigerians that she will take the lead in championing the sexual harassment case involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan when the investigation reaches the red chamber.
Earlier, The New Daily Prime reported that Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan representing Kogi Central accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment during her appearance on Arise Television.
The allegation sparked controversy, with many calling for a thorough investigation and demanding that Mr Akpabio step aside as Senate President pending the outcome.
Reacting in a statement on her X page on Friday, Mrs Kingibe acknowledged the ongoing discourse and sought to set the record straight.
She clarified that her stance was not intended to undermine Mts Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims.
She stated that she was previously unaware of the harassment allegation but reaffirmed her commitment to the fight against all forms of violence against women and girls.

“As the Senator Representing the Federal Capital Territory, FCT in the 10th Senate, and the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, I would like to state to all Nigerians that I am aware of the public dismay and I would like to address a few things officially.
“As a sitting Senator, I will always defend the truth and fight to right all wrongs. Over the years, sexual harassment and assault have become commonplace in our homes and workplaces. Every Nigerian, irrespective of gender, ethnicity, or religion, should be committed to the struggle to end it as it affects all genders”, she said.
According to her, once an accusation of sexual harassment is formally presented to the Senate, the body must determine the gravity of the matter and ensure a thorough investigation through the appropriate institutional mechanisms.

She stated that the Office of the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, which she leads, serves as a pillar of hope and a milestone for equality, equity, inclusivity, and opportunity.
Mrs Kingibe further emphasised that the office provides Nigerian women with recourse, refuge, and the right to dignity and social justice.
“It’s in this capacity that I am demanding an open, transparent and fair investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment. Justice, fairness and equity must be provided for everyone regardless of gender, position or social class.
“I affirm my commitment to protecting the rights of girls and women across Nigeria. I align with the global community in advocating for increased gender equality in political representation and across all sectors of our society”, said the senator.
According to her, she is focused on advancing the 35% Gender Inclusion Bill and advocating for the establishment of special seats for women to enhance their participation in governance.
She stated that the Gender Equity Bill 2025 (SB 743), which she is championing, has passed its first reading and is now awaiting the second reading.
Mrs Kingibe reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to serving the Nigerian people, undeterred by falsehoods, and dedicated to fostering a democracy built on justice, fairness, and equity.
She assured Nigerians, particularly women, that she remains steadfast in her pursuit of good governance, undaunted by challenges, and determined to see a new Nigeria emerge.
