Police deny bail for singer Speed Darlington
Activist Deji Adeyanju failed to free singer Speed Darlington, rearrested in Owerri on Nov 26th after cyberstalking Burna Boy.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Wednesday night, Adeyanju expressed his disappointment at the police’s refusal to grant bail to the singer. He stated, “The Nigerian police brought our client Speed Darlington to Abuja from Owerri this evening, and I have just met with him. They have declined to release him on bail over defamation charges related to Burna Boy.”
Adeyanju further lamented the irony of the situation, highlighting the stark contrast between Burna Boy’s public persona as a social critic and his alleged role in the singer’s detention. He pointed out that while Burna Boy often sings about oppression and injustice, he appears to be using his influence to suppress the freedom of expression of others.

The incident has sparked widespread concern and condemnation from fans, human rights activists, and legal experts alike. Many have criticized the police’s actions, arguing that the arrest and detention of Speed Darlington are excessive and unjustified. They contend that the charges against him do not warrant such harsh measures and that the police should prioritize more pressing matters.

The case has also raised important questions about the limits of free speech and the role of the police in enforcing the law. While it is important to protect individuals from harm and defamation, it is equally important to uphold the right to freedom of expression. The police must exercise caution and proportionality when responding to allegations of cyberstalking, ensuring that their actions do not stifle legitimate criticism or dissent.
Furthermore, the incident has highlighted the potential misuse of the legal system to settle personal disputes. Some observers have suggested that Burna Boy may be using his influence to silence critics and intimidate those who dare to challenge his authority. This raises concerns about the abuse of power and the erosion of democratic principles.
As the legal battle unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the police will reconsider their decision and release Speed Darlington on bail. The outcome of this case will have significant implications for freedom of speech and the rule of law in Nigeria. It is crucial that the judiciary acts impartially and ensures that justice is served, regardless of the individuals involved.
In the meantime, the public is urged to remain vigilant and to speak out against any attempts to suppress freedom of expression. It is through collective action and advocacy that we can safeguard our fundamental rights and ensure a just and equitable society.
