The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede, has announced the launch of a new joint military operation, Operation Savannah Shield, aimed at curbing insecurity and criminal activities in Kwara State and neighbouring Niger State.
Speaking during a visit to the Kwara State Government House, the CDS said the operation was designed to address the recent spate of insecurity that has claimed lives and disrupted communities in the region. He commiserated with the state government and residents over the casualties recorded in recent attacks, assuring them of the Armed Forces’ resolve to checkmate criminal elements.
General Oluyede explained that Operation Savannah Shield is a joint task force bringing together combat units from across the Armed Forces and other security agencies to improve coordination and operational effectiveness.
According to him, the task force has multiple commanders and a robust structure to ensure rapid response and sustained pressure on criminal groups.
He noted that the security challenges facing the country require collective action and support, stressing the importance of collaboration between the military and state governments.
In his remarks, the CDS acknowledged the role of the Kwara State Governor, who also serves as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, in supporting security efforts and mobilising assistance for the Armed Forces.
“We are challenged, but within that scope, it is important for us to address this security issue,” he said, adding that adequate resources remain critical to the success of military operations. He appealed for continued and increased support from state authorities, noting that operational effectiveness is closely tied to logistics and funding.
Oluyede expressed confidence that the deployment of Operation Savannah Shield would lead to improved security outcomes in Kwara and Niger states, as the military moves swiftly to commence operations and “set the ball rolling” without delay.
