President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Chief Israel Ogbue, who passed away at the age of 99.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President condoled with the family, friends, and associates of the late banker.
He described him as a man of dignity, integrity, and strategic foresight who played a key role in the growth of the bank.
Ogbue, who had a distinguished career in the Federal Civil Service, the National Insurance Corporation (NICON), and NAL Merchant Bank, joined the board of United Bank for Africa as a non-executive director in 2005. He was appointed Chairman in 2011 and served on the board until 2013.
According to the President, Ogbue provided “steady and principled leadership during a pivotal period in the bank’s transformation.”
President Tinubu also noted that the late Ogbue was the father of Dr Awele Elumelu, wife of UBA Group Chairman Tony Elumelu.
“The President extends his condolences to the Elumelu family and the extended family members over this loss, and sympathises with UBA’s Board, management, and staff,” the statement said.
Tinubu further acknowledged widespread tributes celebrating the life of the late UBA Chairman, describing him as a devoted family man, a committed public servant, and a man of deep Christian faith who lived humbly and dedicated his resources to the service of the church, the poor, the vulnerable, and his community.
The President prayed that God would grant eternal rest to the departed patriarch and comfort his family.
