Ethan Nwaneri shines as Arsenal advances in Carabao Cup

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the outstanding performance of 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, who scored a stunning goal in Arsenal’s 3-0 Carabao Cup win against Preston North End. Nwaneri, a rising star from Arsenal’s academy, impressed with his first-half goal, curling a precise shot into the net after Gabriel Jesus had opened the scoring. Substitute Kai Havertz capped the night with a third goal after the break, securing Arsenal’s spot in the quarter-finals where they will face Crystal Palace at the Emirates in mid-December. Reflecting on Nwaneri’s progress, Arteta noted that the young midfielder has the “right attitude” and “big talent” to succeed, while cautioning that the club would continue to guide his development carefully. “He’s going to really dictate how fast that’s going to go,” Arteta said. “There’s so much personality there. He wants every ball, he wants to make things happen.” The teenager, who became the youngest player to debut in the Premier League in 2022 at 15 years old, has already made four league appearances as a substitute this season. The match was another step in Nwaneri’s rapid ascent, as he not only scored but also struck the crossbar, drawing admiration from Arsenal fans who celebrated his skill and maturity throughout the game. “We have some player there,” Arteta remarked, adding that Nwaneri’s team-mates frequently sought him out, a “great sign” of the respect he’s earned within the squad. Despite Preston’s spirited efforts and determination to limit Arsenal’s chances, the Championship side struggled to retain possession and were quickly outmatched by the visiting Gunners, who made eight changes to their starting lineup. By the time Preston’s Jeppe Okkels and Emil Riis found opportunities to threaten Arsenal’s goal, the score was already 3-0. Arteta’s decision to include regulars like Bukayo Saka and Havertz as substitutes hinted at his commitment to keeping his team in form across competitions. The game also marked debuts for two more Arsenal academy products: 18-year-olds Tommy Setford, a goalkeeper, and defender Ayden Heaven. With a blend of experienced players and promising youth, Arsenal now turns its focus to the quarter-final, ready to build on a strong Carabao Cup campaign as they continue to look to the future.
La Liga matches postponed due to severe flooding in Valencia region

La Liga is set to postpone all football matches in the Valencia region this weekend following devastating flash floods that have claimed at least 95 lives. Torrential rainfall overwhelmed parts of Spain, with Chiva, a town near Valencia, experiencing over a year’s worth of rainfall in just eight hours. Real Madrid’s highly anticipated match against Valencia on Saturday, along with Villarreal’s game against Rayo Vallecano, is expected to be delayed. The postponements extend to Segunda Division matches, affecting fixtures such as Castellon vs. RC Ferrol, CD Eldense vs. SD Huesca, and Levante vs. Malaga. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) will finalize the postponements with its competition committee on Thursday, but has already recommended the suspension of all non-professional matches across the region. This decision follows a series of disruptions in the Copa del Rey, where Valencia’s midweek clash against sixth-tier Parla Escuela was postponed and rescheduled for November 6. Other teams, including Levante, Ejea, Hercules de Alicante, and Getafe, have also seen their matches delayed due to the weather. In solidarity with the affected communities, a minute’s silence will be observed at all other Spanish league matches over the next two weekends. Several top-tier clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, have issued condolences. Barcelona expressed their “sympathy to the relatives of the victims and solidarity with those affected in Valencia, Albacete, and Andalusia.” More than 1,000 troops have been deployed to assist with rescue operations in the impacted regions.’’
Jurgen Klopp defends move to Red Bull amid fan backlash

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has publicly defended his decision to join Red Bull as head of global soccer operations, acknowledging the criticism but explaining the move as the right step in his career. After departing Liverpool last season, the German coach’s new role with Red Bull, starting in January, has sparked controversy, especially among fans of his former club Borussia Dortmund. Red Bull’s presence in football is divisive in Germany, stemming from its acquisition and transformation of the small club SSV Markranstadt into Bundesliga powerhouse RB Leipzig in 2009. This move drew ire from traditionalists, with Leipzig often described as “Germany’s most hated club.” The criticism has persisted as Red Bull expanded its network to include clubs such as Red Bull Salzburg, New York Red Bulls, Red Bull Bragantino in Brazil, and a stake in Leeds United. In an interview on Toni Kroos’ podcast, Klopp explained that pleasing everyone is impossible in football, saying, “I did not want to step on anyone’s toes… but I don’t know what I could have done so that everyone is happy.” Klopp, now 57, emphasized his desire to stay involved in the sport without returning to sideline coaching. “It was clear for me that I would do something—so then Red Bull came,” he noted, describing the new role as a “fantastic opportunity.” While the move has unsettled fans in Germany, especially those connected to Dortmund, Klopp said their reactions were “not hugely relevant.” He added, “If you organise your life around trying to please everyone, you’ll find you fail every day.” Addressing his decision to avoid managerial roles, Klopp ruled out managing even at the international level, saying, “My only real option would have been to become a coach of a national side, but I don’t want to be a coach any more.” Klopp’s move to Red Bull marks a new chapter in his storied career, one he hopes will be both impactful and fulfilling. But it remains clear that he understands the legacy and scrutiny that accompany his name in the football world.
