FG Didn’t Order Airline Operators to Purchase Jet A1 Fuel from Dangote Refinery – Keyamo

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has clarified that the Federal Government did not mandate airline operators to purchase Jet A1 fuel exclusively from Dangote Refinery. Keyamo made this statement during the Renewed Hope Global Virtual Town Hall Conference, themed ‘Elevating Nigeria’s Aviation Strategic Trajectory under the Renewed Hope Administration’, monitored by The New Daily Prime on Saturday. Related Story: Keyamo Urges States, Private Sector to Invest in Airstrip Development Related Story: Nigeria to Transition from Fossil Fuels to Sustainable Aviation Energy by 2050 – Keyamo The Minister emphasized that the government remains committed to maintaining a free-market approach, where transactions are guided by the principle of a willing buyer and a willing seller. “On the principle of willing buyer, the airline operators independently decided to support a local initiative, the Dangote Refinery. It is only fitting for them, as local operators, to purchase Jet A1 fuel from a local source,” Keyamo explained. He clarified that this was a decision made solely by the airline operators and was not a directive from the government. “They communicated their desire to me, and I gave them my blessing. However, this is not a federal government policy, but a private initiative by the airline operators,” the Minister concluded.

Nigeria to Transition from Fossil Fuels to Sustainable Aviation Energy by 2050 – Keyamo

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Saturday said Nigeria has aligned with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) policy aimed at transitioning from fossil fuels to sustainable aviation fuels. Keyamo disclosed this during a Renewed Hope Global Virtual Town Hall Conference themed ‘Elevating Nigeria’s Aviation Strategic Trajectory under the Renewed Hope Administration’, monitored by The New Daily Prime. Keyamo said the move is part of the country’s broader strategy to adopt cleaner energy practices within its aviation sector by 2050. He added that the policy is designed to make Nigeria’s environment cleaner and ensure safer air travel globally. “We are very serious and committed members of ICAO, the International Civil Aviation Organization. ICAO has many programs, and we have embraced these programs as a nation. By 2050, we have a deadline to fully migrate from fossil fuels to sustainable aviation fuel,” Keyamo said. “We have committed to this environmental policy to make our environment cleaner and our air safer worldwide. Many nations have started the process, but I don’t think they have made much progress, and African nations are still far behind. We have attended a couple of ICAO conferences, which emphasize that no nation should be left behind,” he added. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) emphasized that Nigeria is serious about meeting the 2050 deadline to fully transition from fossil fuels to sustainable aviation fuels, noting that African nations, including Nigeria, are currently lagging in this transition. Related Story: Keyamo Urges States, Private Sector to Invest in Airstrip Development The former Director of Strategic Communications for ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s 2019 re-election campaign stated that while some countries have made significant progress—ranging from 5 to 10 percent in the use of sustainable aviation fuel—Nigeria has yet to begin full implementation but remains an active participant in the global movement initiated by ICAO. “And by that, I mean aeroplanes around the world that are polluting and using conventional A1 fuel. We are looking for a way to stop using those types of fuels and adopt cleaner energy,” he explained. Keyamo added that while Nigeria has not yet started implementation, the country is part of the global movement to protect the environment and ensure greener airports. The former Minister of State for Labour and Employment also outlined plans by his ministry to reduce reliance on diesel for powering airports, highlighting solar energy as a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative. He mentioned ongoing efforts to attract public-private partnerships (PPPs) to finance the solar power initiative at airports, with many investors already showing interest. “If you saw an advert we placed recently, it was calling on the public to express interest in most of the PPP programs we want to implement. One of the major PPP programs we want to pursue is solar power for our airports. Many investors are already showing interest in investing their own money. Many people are coming up with their financing structures to power our airports with solar,” Keyamo noted. The Delta-born politician reaffirmed that these environmental policies are not only futuristic but already in motion, aiming for more sustainable and cost-effective solutions in Nigeria’s aviation sector. Keyamo Urges States, Private Sector to Invest in Airstrip Development

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called on state governments and private sector stakeholders to collaborate with the federal government in constructing more airstrips to improve connectivity to remote areas. Speaking at the Renewed Hope Global Virtual Town Hall Conference under the theme “Elevating Nigeria’s Aviation Strategic Trajectory under the Renewed Hope Administration,” monitored by The New Daily Prime. Keyamo stressed the importance of airstrips in accessing remote regions. He urged significant investment in airstrip infrastructure to ensure better travel connections across the country’s rural and remote locations. As the former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Keyamo highlighted, “Talking about connectivity to remote areas, when we attempt to build airports in areas where there are none, some Nigerians criticize us. They question why build more airports, especially when they seem unprofitable, even for private airstrips.” Keyamo argued that building airstrips is a necessity and a public service, similar to providing access to clean water. Establishing these facilities in rural areas, he added, would help curb urban migration, explaining that the absence of essential infrastructure and opportunities drives people to move to urban centres. “The more infrastructure you push into remote areas, the more people enjoy staying there,” Keyamo noted, drawing comparisons to countries like the UK and the US, where even small villages have access to critical infrastructure compared to cities. He also emphasized the importance of airstrips in times of crisis, such as during floods or other disasters, where road access may be impossible, highlighting the role of airstrips in delivering aid, food, and medical supplies. Keyamo further explained that his ministry prioritizes the construction of airstrips in regions lacking airports. In the South-East, for example, he identified Abia State for an airstrip project, as it remains the only state in the region without one. The initiative in Abia is moving forward, with the state government opting to collaborate on building an international airport instead. In the South-West, he pointed out that most states already have airports, with ongoing projects in Ekiti and Ogun. The only state left without one is Osun, where a new airstrip is planned for Osogbo. Keyamo also praised the private sector’s involvement, citing efforts like TY Danjuma’s private airstrip in Taraba and Canaan land’s project in Ogun State. He encouraged other private sector stakeholders to apply for airstrip development, reiterating the need for as many airstrips as possible, whether through federal, state, or private investment. JUST IN: National Grid Collapses, Plunges Millions Into Darkness

The national power grid has collapsed, plunging millions of citizens across the country into darkness. The grid failure, which occurred earlier today, has affected homes, businesses, and essential services, leaving a significant portion of the population without electricity. Reports from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) indicate that the collapse happened due to an unspecified technical fault. Engineers are currently working to identify the root cause of the disruption and restore power as quickly as possible. This latest grid collapse adds to a series of similar occurrences that have plagued the country’s electricity sector over the years, leading to widespread frustration among the populace. The national grid, which is supposed to distribute electricity to all parts of the country, has been notoriously unstable, resulting in frequent blackouts and economic losses. Businesses, especially those relying heavily on electricity, are already feeling the pinch, with many switching to backup generators to sustain operations. Hospitals, telecommunications networks, and other critical services are also grappling with the unexpected power outage. Authorities have assured the public that they are doing everything within their capacity to restore normalcy. Meanwhile, citizens are urged to remain patient as repair efforts continue. This incident further underscores the need for a more robust and sustainable energy infrastructure to meet the demands of Nigeria’s growing population and economy.

AFCON 2025 Qualifier: Tinubu demands justice for Super Eagles’ unfair treatment in Libya

President Bola Tinubu has expressed relief at the safe return of the Super Eagles to Nigeriawhile voicing his deep concern over the inhumane treatment the team faced at a Libyan airport. The New Daily Prime reported that Libyan officials detained the Super Eagles at Al Abraq Airport for over 12 hours upon their arrival, leading to the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) withdrawal of the team from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya. In a statement issued on Monday by the NFF Communications Department, it was revealed that the team was left stranded and unattended at the airport. The Super Eagles had departed Nigeria on Sunday morning, prepared for their AFCON matchday 4 clash against the Mediterranean Knights. Originally, Libya was set to host the three-time African champions at the 10,000-capacity Martyrs of Benina Stadium, located just 10 kilometres from Benghazi. However, reports indicated that the team was diverted to a different city, further complicating logistics. President Tinubu, through a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, urged the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to conduct a comprehensive investigation and recommend suitable sanctions against those responsible for the blatant violation of the organisation’s Statutes and Regulations. He commended the swift and effective coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development in handling the regrettable incident, ensuring the safe return of the Nigerian players. The President praised the resilience and unwavering spirit of the players, who endured a difficult ordeal in Libya but remained steadfast in their commitment to the sport. Recognising football’s unique ability to unite people and nations, Tinubu condemned the unsportsmanlike and inhumane treatment of Nigerian players, which he views as a gross departure from the values of the game he holds dear. He called on all football enthusiasts and administrators to come together in solidarity to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, ensuring that the integrity and spirit of the sport are upheld.

Governor Usman Ododo and the desecration of his oath of office

By Nelson Ekujumi On being sworn into office on the 27th of January, 2024 as the Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Usman Ododo swore with the Quran to uphold the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. However, since his assumption into office, subsequent events surrounding his immediate predecessor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, who is presently on the run from the law, have exposed Governor Ododo as a leader who is violating his oath of office and by extension, pushing to the back burner the welfare and well-being of the good people of Kogi State. On several occasions, Governor Ododo has abused his office to assault the constitution in preventing the EFCC from arresting Yahaya Bello, the latest being his ‘abracadabra’ visit to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) office in Abuja, where he was pictured, holding hands with the wanted suspect and thus, misused his constitutional immunity to prevent a man that has been declared wanted from being arrested. Sadly, we also recollect how the EFCC stormed the Kogi State Government lodge in Abuja on two separate occasions in April 2024 and on the 18th of September, 2024 to arrest Yahaya Bello for questioning over corruption allegations while in office as governor after failing to honour EFCC’s invitations and how Governor Ododo on both occasions prevented the arrest by leveraging on the immunity he enjoys as a sitting governor. As I write, former governor Yahaya Bello has been declared wanted by the EFCC for failing to honour its summons to explain himself on issues surrounding the misappropriation of billions of Kogi taxpayers’ money. In addition, the ex-governor’s wanted person tag has been affirmed by the courts, though he has tried unsuccessfully to have it removed from his neck. Fortunately, while Yahaya Bello is on the run from the law, though temporarily, one is aware that some of his accomplices who partook in the alleged illegal and corrupt siphoning of the people of Kogi state’s money are presently standing trial for the crime of corruption and abuse of public office and misuse of trust. In addition, some of the stolen funds have been traced to where they were lodged by Yahaya Bello. However, amid the commendable efforts of the present EFCC administration to live up to its core responsibility of fighting corruption as mandated by the constitution, one is shocked and ashamed that the Kogi State House of Assembly, which ought to be at the forefront of supporting the anti-graft agency in its war against corruption for the collective interest of the good and long-suffering people of Kogi State, is rather waging a parochial, self-serving and anti-people war against the EFCC for carrying out its statutory functions. The Kogi State House of Assembly, which ought to put the collective interest of the people of Kogi State as its topmost priority, which is the reason why they were voted into office, by their conduct so far, has proven to be enablers of corruption by waging a campaign of blackmail and calumny against the anti-graft agency to hands off ex-governor Bello, that the Kogi people’s money is not missing! While we are embarrassed by this condemnable and anti-people conduct of the Kogi State House of Assembly in prioritizing the interest of an individual far and above the collective good of the people of Kogi State, we are not surprised that they are following in the shameful, despicable and condemnable footsteps of the Delta State house of assembly in 2013 during the former governor James Ibori saga, when they claimed that Delta State funds were not missing, that EFCC should leave him alone, even in the face of the incontrovertible facts of James Ibori attempt to bribe the then EFCC chairman, now National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu with the sum of 15 million dollars which was deposited with the CBN as evidence. But while the show of shame by the Delta State House of Assembly as an enabler of corruption lasted, James Ibori was arrested by the authorities in London, prosecuted, and jailed for corruption, only for the same shameless Delta lawmakers to come back to public glare and demand for the return of the seized bribe money of $15 million from the convicted James Ibori to be returned to the state coffers. The same money that they previously claimed was not stolen. It is sad that in our democracy today from the Kogi State show of shame by Governor Usman Ododo and the Kogi State House of Assembly, we are now witnesses to the violation and abuse of the constitution by persons who ought to uphold the provisions of the constitution for the collective good that they swore to on oath; but have rather turned violators because of individual, personal, self-serving and corrupt interest. This is condemnable in its entirety. However, we must commend the EFCC for its professionalism and diligent conduct in the face of intimidation, provocation, campaign of blackmail, and calumny to distract it from performing its constitutional duty. We urge EFCC to remain focused, law-abiding, and consistent to ensure that the war against corruption is fought to a logical conclusion with the Yahaya Bello case and others in tandem with the provisions of the law and the collective good of the people of Nigeria.
