Nigeria, gambling with leadership selection — Gov Oyebanji

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s ongoing “gamble” with leadership selection, describing it as a precarious “try-by-error” system. Speaking at the 11th Annual Public Lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church, titled “Leadership in Nigeria and its Impact on the Next Generation,” Oyebanji advocated for integrating leadership training and mentorship into the national education curriculum. In his address, Oyebanji emphasized that leadership should be considered a fundamental skill for all citizens, on par with basic education in literacy and numeracy. He argued for a future-oriented curriculum that embeds leadership principles and practical skills from early education levels. “If you want to change people, teach them what you want them to change,” he stated. The governor highlighted the deficiencies in Nigeria’s current leadership recruitment practices, noting that many individuals ascend to positions of power without the necessary qualifications or experience. “People sometimes find themselves in leadership positions by default, not due to personal merit,” he said. Oyebanji called for a system where certification and structured training in leadership become prerequisites for holding significant societal roles. He underscored the importance of preparing the younger generation for effective leadership, asserting that bad leadership is a critical challenge facing Nigeria today. “We need to ensure well-structured leadership training for the younger generation,” he said, advocating for a thorough understanding of how to manage diverse audiences with varying needs and characteristics. The guest speaker at the event, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, founder of The Chair Centre, echoed Oyebanji’s sentiments, stressing the need to equip future leaders with essential values. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos also weighed in, highlighting the importance of nurturing both spiritual and political leadership among the youth. As Nigeria grapples with the complexities of leadership, Oyebanji’s call for systemic change and targeted training underscores a growing recognition that effective leadership is critical to the nation’s progress.

Federal Government to resolve Osun, gold mining firm dispute

The Federal Government is taking steps to resolve the ongoing conflict between the Osun State Government and Segilola Resources Operating Limited, a gold mining company. Dr. Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, announced the inauguration on Wednesday, October 9, of a fact-finding team aimed at investigating the dispute’s root causes. This announcement follows the Osun State Government’s decision on September 30 to seal the mining company’s premises, citing allegations of tax evasion and other operational infractions amounting to approximately $1.9 million. The state accused Segilola Resources of engaging in unethical business practices. In response to the state’s actions, Segilola Resources obtained a court order preventing the Osun State Government from interfering with its operations. During a press briefing at the ministry headquarters, Minister Alake emphasised that mining operations fall under the exclusive legislative purview of the federal government, meaning sub-national authorities cannot unilaterally halt these operations. Alake stated, “While mining companies must comply with all relevant laws and regulations, including tax obligations and environmental standards, it is crucial to recognise that sub-national authorities do not have the power to arbitrarily shut down mining activities.” The minister highlighted the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments in the mining sector, pointing to the role of the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO). This committee includes members nominated by state governments, allowing for substantial state involvement in mining regulation. In inaugurating the fact-finding committee, Alake outlined its objectives, which include identifying the causes of the disagreement, reviewing contracts between the two parties, and assessing the impact of the mining operations on local communities and the Osun State economy. Dr. Mary Ogbe, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, urged state governments to work in partnership with the federal government to prevent disruptions in mining operations, warning that such actions could deter foreign investment in the sector. Dr. Dele Oye, the committee’s Vice-Chairman and a representative of the Nigeria Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, assured the minister of the committee’s commitment to integrity and diligence in its investigation. The committee, which includes experts from various governmental and industry sectors, has been given seven days to submit its report on the matter.
NDCCITMA will transform Niger Delta economy – Governor Eno

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has expressed optimism that the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Trade, Mines & Agriculture (NDCCITMA) will play a crucial role in transforming the region’s economy. Eno made the remarks on Wednesday, October 9, during a one-day sensitisation event in Uyo aimed at introducing the NDCCITMA initiative to the people of the state. Represented by the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mr. John Etim, Eno highlighted the misconception that the Niger Delta is solely a mono-economy reliant on crude oil. He stated, “For too long, the Niger Delta has been erroneously portrayed as a mono-economy… but our region is much more than that. We are blessed with abundant human and mineral resources far beyond crude oil.” Emphasising the region’s agricultural potential, Eno noted that the Niger Delta is a major producer of oil palm and other cash crops, capable of achieving self-sufficiency and even becoming a net exporter of palm oil and food items. He stressed the importance of NDCCITMA for the swift economic transformation of the area. The governor commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for facilitating the initiative, which aims to enhance economic collaboration and support for local entrepreneurs. Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director of NDDC, echoed Eno’s sentiments, stating that the NDCCITMA would bridge the gap between the commission and regional entrepreneurs. Ogbuku, represented by Mr. Abasiandikan Nkono, the state representative on the NDDC board, emphasized that the chamber would provide vital support to businesses struggling to meet the stringent requirements of financial institutions. “The establishment of NDCCITMA will positively influence the development of a robust transport system, manufacturing, merchandising, mining, and food security for our families,” Ogbuku said. He added that the initiative aims to lower food costs to improve public health. Chairman of NDCCITMA, Mr. Idaere Ogan, described the chamber as a vital resource for individuals seeking guidance and support in growing their businesses. He asserted that the organization would enhance trade and commerce across all business scales, from nano enterprises to large corporations. “We are poised to work with our development partners, the NDDC, to solve the food problem of the region, enable manufacturing of goods, develop skills, and build capacity within the region,” Ogan stated. He called on all local chambers of commerce, business communities, professional associations, and individuals to collaborate with NDCCITMA for the accelerated development of the Niger Delta.
